The name is of French origin meaning ‘to mix’
This relates to the blending of the coffee with cream. The melange has two versions. These can be different in the same city never mind the same country. One is closely related to the cappuccino with espresso, steamed milk and foam. The level of foam seems vary again. The other version can be mistaken easily with espresso con panna or Vienna with coffee and whipped cream. A Wiener Melange is German for Viennese blend referring to Vienna, Austria. Hence the Vienna can sometimes hardly be separated from the Melange other than the cup it is served in instead of a more traditional Vienna glass.
